In Spite of the Tennis, 2016

Installation: Collage, resin blocks, paper maquettes, laminate, tiles and ceramic paint, fabric, foam, car- board, tape

This installation was born out of a troubling interaction with an accidental sculpture; while mounting shelves I stacked random wooden blocks as a support, and was unsettled by my observation of the instant that the blocks had been stacked I caught myself forgetting their utility and seeing them only as an 'artwork'. In this way In Spite of the Tennis is an attempt to explore and overcome the anxiety produced when I came face to face with the process of my own world building, that is, when I was momentarily able to glimpse the the machinations of my own mind as it slotted these random objects into the ontological category of ‘Art.’
